Eco-Friendly Indoor Lighting: How to Light Your Home More Efficiently

We’re in-between a rock and a hard place, so to speak, when it comes to lighting. We can’t go about our daily lives without using the lights in our home — unless we start exclusively using candles or sunlight to brighten every room – but as a result we’re forced to shell out tons of money on the energy bill every month. So, the choice is there: cut down on using lights or continue paying entirely too much to use them as much as we’re accustomed to.

Don’t fret! A middle ground exists, and it offers a solution that solves the problem you’re faced with. Investing in eco-friendly indoor lighting can help you cut down on the amount of energy you spend lighting your home, but you won’t have to sacrifice any illumination capabilities! Let Mister Sparky guide you through a few of the ways you can make more energy-efficient decisions to ensure your home stays bright all the time. Our electricians can help you make it a reality, and we’ll make inefficient lighting a thing of the past!

Switching to LED Bulbs

The easiest – and perhaps the simplest – fix to your lighting problems is by just replacing the type of bulbs you use! LED light bulbs offer significant advantages to traditional incandescent versions.
– They’re More Efficient: According to the Department of Energy, LED bulbs use 80 percent less energy than incandescent ones do. You’re already slashing the output by a massive amount!
– They Generate Significantly Less Heat: An incandescent bulb gives off roughly 85 btus of energy per hour. By comparison, an LED bulb only emits 3.4 btus in the same timeframe. Not only are you using less energy, but your home will feel cooler to boot.
– They’re Safer: Unlike traditional bulbs, LEDs don’t contain mercury. They operate just through the use of electrons, so no harmful chemicals are present in them.
Keep in mind, though, that LED bulbs are costlier on the front end than incandescent bulbs. However, the benefits you reap from making the switch more than make up for the difference in cost to purchase them.

Use Daylight Sensors

Most homes are stuck with a binary switch for their lights: they’re either on or off. By upgrading to daylight sensors – which detect the amount of light filtering through and adjust the lighting level accordingly – you’re not wasting energy when you don’t need it.

Don’t Forget About Dimmers

Adding dimmers to your home’s lighting system allows you to manually adjust the level of light you receive. They’re similar to daylight sensors, but you have all the control instead of leaving it up to nature.

Making your home more energy-efficient is as easy as substituting a few different methods of lighting for the ones you’ve already got! The changes aren’t drastic and won’t force you to undergo a series of significant changes. However, you’ll be glad to have made them once you receive a lower energy bill at the end of the month.
